Groundskeeper Cuevas marks last day at Rosenblatt

Jesse Cuevas ended his long goodbye to Rosenblatt Stadium Wednesday. That goodbye has lasted through the last College World Series at Omaha's storied baseball park, the final Omaha Royals game there and the last Omaha Nighthawks matchup. But on Wednesday, the head groundskeeper and members of his crew spent their last day at the stadium, a day after the Omaha City Council approved its sale to the Henry Doorly Zoo.

Wittels' streak ends, 2 games shy of tying Ventura

Garrett Wittels said he would tip his cap to whomever ended his hitting streak. Much to Florida International's dismay, Friday was the night he made good on that vow. Wittels' pursuit of NCAA history is over. He went 0 for 4 against Southeastern Louisiana, leaving him two games shy of matching Robin Ventura's 58-game Division I record set in 1987 and four short of the NCAA all-divisions mark of 60 games by Damian Costantino of Division III Salve Regina from 2001-03.

But superstitions are superstitions, and Wittels vowed not to get them trimmed until his 56-game hitting streak — still going from last season — ends. “Gets annoying sometimes,” Wittels said, tugging one of his curls. “But it’s not that...

U.S.-Japan baseball series to come to Omaha

The stakes will be considerably higher this year when the U.S. National baseball team comes to Omaha to play a game against Japanese collegiate players. The U.S. team played a one-game exhibition last summer against an all-star team from one of Japan's collegiate leagues. This year's game, set for July 8 at TD Ameritrade Park, will pit the U.S. against the Japanese national university team.

    Gamecocks eager for CWS repeat

The days when South Carolina baseball coach Ray Tanner's offseasons were mostly quiet are long gone. That's what happens when your program wins its first national title. “After a while I would start my speeches with ‘Repeat,' so I could save some time,” Tanner said Friday. “It's been great. I love the situation we're in.” What's not to love, other than the calls from fans to bring another College World Series crown back to campus later this year. Tanner says that...
