Cyclones seeking respect

Iowa State guard Diante Garrett knows the expectations placed on the men’s basketball program aren’t very high this season. “We are the underdogs,” Garrett said. “A lot of guys are saying we aren’t going to be any good because we have a new coach and (have) a lot of new players.” But through six games, Iowa State is undefeated, and Garrett likes what he’s seeing from the Cyclones. Garrett is certain more people will like what the team is doing if...

Source: North Texas turns to ex-ISU coach McCarney

North Texas is going back to an experienced college coach. Dan McCarney, a Florida assistant and former Iowa State head coach, will be announced as the new coach of the Mean Green on Tuesday, a person familiar with the decision told the Associated Press on Monday. The person would not comment publicly because the announcement had not been made.

Second-half surge lifts 6-0 ISU

Fred Hoiberg’s message to his Iowa State basketball team at halftime was simple: Keep shooting. His players took the advice to heart. The Cyclones started knocking down the jump shots they had been missing and rolled to an 81-59 victory against Montana State Saturday to remain unbeaten.

Iowa State transfer loses appeal

The NCAA has denied Iowa State basketball player Royce White’s appeal to play this season, the Cyclones announced Wednesday. White, a 6-foot-8 forward from Minneapolis, is ineligible under NCAA transfer rules, and the ruling means that he will sit out this season. White enrolled at Minnesota for his freshman season in 2009-2010. He announced his decision to transfer to Iowa State on July 12. He will be a redshirt sophomore for the Cyclones in 2011-12.

ISU senior has 'a great moment'

Jamie Vanderbeken figured it was the least he could do. His parents, Russell and Eleanor, had made the 18-hour drive from their home in Canada to see their son play. So the Iowa State senior delivered one of the most memorable shots in school history, a 30-footer as time expired to give the Cyclones a 91-88 win over Creighton at Wells Fargo Arena. “It was a great moment,'' said the 6-foot-11 senior from Belleville, Ontario. “Having (my parents) here and hitting that shot and just...

ISU ‘Mayor' riding on a wave of popularity

If this keeps up, “The Mayor” might have to run for higher office. Then again, there is probably not a job Fred Hoiberg wanted more than to be the basketball coach at Iowa State. “This,” he said, “has been a dream come true — to come home and coach in front of the people that have supported me my entire life.'' Hoiberg, a hometown hero dubbed “The Mayor” when he starred for Iowa State, has the Cyclones off to a 3-0 start heading into Sunday's 2:05...

Stout Tiger defense shuts down ISU

Blaine Gabbert threw a touchdown pass and No. 15 Missouri turned a fake punt into another score in a 14-0 victory against Iowa State Saturday night. On a chilly night, Missouri (9-2, 5-2 Big 12) sputtered offensively for most of the game. But the Tigers’ defense remained stout while Missouri made just enough plays with the ball to deny Iowa State (5-7, 3-5) the victory it needed for bowl eligibility.

Stout Tiger defense will challenge Cyclones

When asked by a reporter about Missouri’s status as the Big 12 scoring defense co-leader, Iowa State offensive coordinator Tom Herman quickly interjected: “Thanks for the reminder.” Herman doesn’t need to be told how good the Tiger defense is. He has seen it again and again on film as the Cyclones prepare to host Missouri on Saturday at 6 p.m. on Fox Sports Net Midwest.

Christopherson leads Cyclones’ blowout

Scott Christopherson made all 11 of his shots in scoring a career-high 29 points, and Iowa State took control with a big first-half run to overwhelm Drake 91-43 Wednesday night. Diante Garrett added 14 points and 10 assists for the Cyclones (3-0), who recorded their biggest margin of victory in the 170-game men’s basketball series with the Bulldogs (1-1). Tiller named as Cyclones QB

Iowa State began November needing just one victory to become eligible for a bowl game and three chances to get it. After two straight losses, the Cyclones are down to their last chance. And they have to try to make it happen with backup quarterback Jerome Tiller running the offense and No. 15 Missouri as the opponent at Jack Trice Stadium on Saturday night. Starting quarterback Austen Arnaud, a fifth-year senior, injured his left knee in last Saturday's 34-14 loss at Colorado and is out for the...

Faster pace leads to Cyclones’ romp

Two games, two decisive victories. Fred Hoiberg couldn’t have asked for much more in his first weekend as Iowa State’s coach. The former Cyclone star watched his team overwhelm Alabama State with balanced scoring and sticky defense in a 74-47 victory Sunday. That followed a 78-64 win over Northern Arizona on Friday night.
