NePrepZone is a must for state's prep fans
The World-Herald and its Nebraska daily newspaper group are launching a new statewide high school sports website, NePrepZone. "We will have content and features that Nebraska prep fans will not be able to find anywhere else," said Jeff Carney, the newspaper's director for digital content development.

Notes: Millard West's Ladwig had workout for Phillies
The Philadelphia Phillies drafted former Millard West pitcher A.J. Ladwig in the 45th round, but the team showed an obvious interest in the All-Nebraska pitcher last week. Kaufman, Berg are captains for WI teams
One has earned most of his recognition for his pitching. The other for his catching. Seniors Taylor Kaufman of Glenwood and Bryce Berg of Carroll Kuemper impacted their teams in a number of different ways. All of them were positive. Kaufman (Class 4-A/3-A) and Berg (Class 2-A/1-A) are the honorary captains of The World-Herald's All-Western Iowa baseball teams. An Iowa baseball recruit, the left-handed Kaufman also was the large-school captain as a junior, when he led the Rams to a Class 3-A...

For North, '61 Series sweet as ice cream
It was five decades ago that an "awe-struck bunch of kids'' from north Omaha accomplished so much playing the game they loved. The baseball team from Omaha North High School reached the American Legion World Series in 1961 and finished third in the nation. Later this month, team members will get together for a 50-year reunion to share memories. And, oh, what memories they have. "It was totally uncharted territory for us,'' team member Ken McEwen said. "Reaching the Series was a different world...

Season comes to a close for P.I. Midwest
P.I. Midwest (Omaha Creighton Prep) saw its season come to an end Sunday at the American Legion Central Plains Regional, losing to Minnesota champion Eden Prairie 13-3. Eden Prairie jumped on P.I. Midwest starter Derek Petrich for three runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back. The defending regional champion had two other big innings, scoring three in the fourth and five in the seventh as the game ended after seven innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Carroll wins, but split keeps P.I. Midwest alive
P.I. Midwest (Omaha Creighton Prep) stayed alive in the American Legion Great Plains Regional baseball tournament Saturday night by defeating South Dakota champion Sioux Falls East 16-10. Earlier in the day, P.I. Midwest (38-12) had suffered its first loss of the double-elimination tourney against Iowa champion Carroll. Heads called, Mount Michael declared champ
At Elkhorn Mount Michael, they'll be talking about Saturday night's heads-up effort for a long time. Class C champion Mount Michael won its American Legion playoff game against Class B champion Gretna in the weirdest way — by correctly calling heads on a coin flip. The unorthodox end to the game came after a heavy thunderstorm made Gretna's field unplayable in the bottom of the third inning, one inning short of an official game scheduled for seven innings.

Playing small ball helps Small Schools East earn win
In all-star games, home runs and extra-base hits are par for the course. That was not the case in Saturday's game between the Large Schools West and Small Schools East in the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association's all-star series. The Small Schools East picked up a 2-0 win by using the unconventional small-ball approach and scoring two runs in the fifth inning on four straight bunts. "We really weren't expecting those bunts to all come right in a row," said Lewis Central's Eric Toole,...
