NU commitment rated the best
Baseball America has rated Nebraska football commitment Bubba Starling as the top high school baseball player in the nation. Starling, a 6-foot-5 right-handed pitcher and outfielder from Gardner, Kan., is considered a top prospect for the 2011 major league draft. Drafted high enough in June, the football quarterback would likely have to turn down a seven-figure contract offer next summer to fulfill his commitment to the Huskers.

Touted Texas back picks Huskers over UT, FSU
Nebraska already had its offensive linemen. And the quarterbacks. Now the Huskers have their running back, too. NU landed a commitment Wednesday night from its most coveted running back prospect, Aaron Green of San Antonio James Madison High School. Green, rated as the nation's No. 5 back by rivals.com, announced his commitment to Nebraska in ceremonious fashion at Maranatha Bible Church, joined by his teammates, coaches, family, pastor and a large audience.

Boston receiver becomes NU’s 14th pledge
Rich Fisher wanted to expose Taariq Allen to some new experiences, so he chose a range of different summer football camps and combines and asked Allen what he thought. One of them was at Nebraska — a foreign land as far as Allen was concerned since he was a high school kid from Boston. “He said we were going to fly out in June and I said, ‘I’m all for it,’” Allen said. “Wherever the competition is, that’s where I wanted to go. He said that and I...

Big-name recruits to visit
Two of Nebraska’s most high-profile targets headline a huge weekend of recruiting activity. Undecided prospects Aaron Green, a running back from San Antonio, and offensive lineman Cyrus Hobbi of Scottsdale, Ariz., are among about 10 official visitors set to see NU as the Huskers host Texas. Quarterbacks Jamal Turner of Arlington, Texas, and Bubba Starling of Gardner, Kan., both committed to Nebraska, are also scheduled to visit Lincoln in addition to at least three other NU pledges.

Sherman: Prime opportunity to impress recruits
Nebraska hasn't added to its class of 2011 recruits since the end of July. It's no problem. Just the opposite — perhaps it's even a blueprint for future recruiting strategy at NU. As the Huskers gain steam on the field, interest for NU builds among high school players. Could this become the new timetable for recruiting at Nebraska? Grab an early pledge or two — the Huskers already have one for 2012. Follow it with a furious spring and summer; then step off the gas to see where the...

Middleton can't meet transfer requirements
Former Washington tight end Kavario Middleton will not enroll at Nebraska after narrowly failing to meet transfer requirements, his ex-high school coach said. Middleton, a 6-foot-5, 255-pound former Parade All-American, planned to start school at NU on Monday after he was kicked off the team at UW in July. He was set to walk on this semester and sit out of games while working to meet coach Bo Pelini's requirements to earn a scholarship in January.

Middleton transfer foiled
9:10 p.m.: Kavario Middleton, the once-touted tight end kicked off the football team at Washington this summer, is not transferring to Nebraska, after all. Dave Miller, his former high school coach, said Middleton narrowly missed meeting academic requirements for the transfer. The issue involved Middelton's grade-point average, altered by a summer course he completed recently. He was eligible to play football at NU and on track to graduate at Washington.

NU transfer hopes to regain focus
Kavario Middleton bounced back from all the pad-to-pad knocks, the violent helmet-to-helmet collisions and the other body-cracking thumps he took with the University of Washington football team. The blow that sent the tight end reeling was the one delivered July 20 — a dismissal from the team for reckless behavior. The team termed it a violation of its rules. Sources later confirmed that Middleton had failed multiple drug tests instituted by campus officials.

Former Washington tight end transfers to NU
Bo Pelini never got the chance to recruit Kavario Middleton out of Lakewood, Wash., in 2007. A top-100 prospect rated as high as the No. 2 tight end nationally, Middleton committed to Washington two days before Pelini was hired — ending Nebraska's courtship of Middleton that had begun under the former NU staff. Some 32 months later, Pelini and Middleton are finally getting together. The 6-foot-5, 255-pound sophomore plans to transfer to NU, starting school Monday as the fall semester...

Recruit looks toward Lincoln, eyes on a prize
Jamal Turner doesn't get overwhelmed with admiration much anymore, which is why that moment in June at Nebraska's quarterback camp sticks out. The NU recruit gathered with the other high school signal-callers, all of them watching and listening as a former Husker starter ran through line-of-scrimmage protocol as if he were reciting the alphabet. Offensive coordinator Shawn Watson was dishing out the rapid-fire questions. Joe Ganz had all the answers.

NU pledge Sade a kicker with lots of drive
Niklas Sade's summer schedule has read off like a concert tour. The kicking specialist went to camps at North Carolina, N.C. State, Maryland and Nebraska before committing to the Huskers. He missed his chance to showcase his talents at LSU because of delays at the notoriously clogged airport in Atlanta. And to catch his breath lately, he's decided to cancel trips to Harvard and Columbia. On this particular Thursday in July, he is supposed to be back at his Raleigh, N.C., home by 7 in the...
