Bitter ending doesn't deter championship goals
Premium ContentThe burning question — was the puck completely past the goal line? — will presumably never have a conclusive answer. The sting of everything ending in such bizarre fashion — a 10-minute video review that felt more like an eternity — will linger long into the offseason. But something UNO's Dean Blais said during his postgame comments Friday night offer a direct glimpse into the coach's mindset. After a controversial overtime goal gave Michigan a 3-2 NCAA tournament win... »

Mavs lose in OT after extensive review
UNO's 2010-11 hockey season, one of the best in program history, didn't end with a loss as much it ended with a question mark: Was the puck completely across the goal line? The Mavs were sent packing with few clear answers, except of course when... »

Board of Regents approves UNO's move

UNO embarked on a new era in its history Friday as the N.U. Board of Regents unanimously approved the school's step up to Division I in athletics. But the controversial move to compete at the highest level of college athletics also means the school will leave two important pieces of its sports legacy in the past. As part of an athletic reorganization tied to the move to the Summit League, campus leaders are dropping the school's football and wrestling teams.

Wrestlers fight to finish; football fans still bitter

Premium ContentAt 10:50 a.m. Friday, the final yes vote was cast. A 2-hour and 50-minute meeting signaled the end of 100 years of football and four decades of dominance in wrestling. The University of Nebraska Board of Regents unanimously passed UNO's resolution to move up to Division I for athletics and join the Summit League. UNO's plan includes eliminating its football and wrestling programs. Members and supporters of the UNO wrestling program fought to the end.

Notes: Non-goal ruling ended Wolverines' season last year

Michigan's coach and players said they hated to see the University of Nebraska at Omaha's season end on a video review and a razor-thin goal vs. no-goal debate. The Wolverines, who advanced to the NCAA West Regional final by topping UNO 3-2 in overtime Friday, have some idea of what the Mavericks are going through. Michigan lost in the regional finals last year — one win short of the Frozen Four — in a double-overtime setback to CCHA rival Miami. The RedHawks scored the winner in...

Haley, Slocum get wins in Mav sweep

UNO opened conference play Friday with a doubleheader sweep of Fort Hays State, winning 4-2 and 5-3. The 24th-ranked Mavericks (23-5, 2-0) rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the first game, taking the lead in the sixth inning on Amber Lutmer’s three-run homer. Winning pitcher Beth Haley (9-3) threw a complete game. Lutmer went 2 for 3 with two RBIs to lead the University of Nebraska at Omaha in the second game. In the nightcap, UNO built a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth before...

Schwartz brothers are keys for Tigers

Jaden Schwartz looked perfectly comfortable skating in the arena that could be his future home. Schwartz, a first-round pick of the St. Louis Blues who starred for the USHL’s Tri-City Storm, had two goals and two assists Friday night to help Colorado College rout defending NCAA champion Boston College 8-4. Rylan Schwartz, Jaden’s brother, had a goal and three assists for the Tigers, who will play Michigan Saturday night for a berth in the Frozen Four. Former Omaha Lancers standout...

Pucks can bounce in all ways at NCAAs

Premium ContentIt doesn't matter whether you're hot. It doesn't matter whether you're seeded high. It doesn't matter how you got in, it matters only that you got in. In hockey, perhaps more than any other sport, the postseason is that time of year when anything is possible. History proves it, and the players and coaches who get to compete in the NCAA tournament relish it.

Notes: CC's Dineen savors postseason berth

Colorado College has a long history of making the NCAA hockey tournament, but Nick Dineen definitely isn't taking this year's appearance for granted. Dineen, from Omaha, joined the Tigers in 2008-2009, the season after they made their last trip to the postseason. It's been quite a year for the junior, who is the only forward to play in all 43 of the Tigers' games. An assistant captain, Dineen set career highs this season in goals (13), assists (10) and points (23). He even netted his only...
