BYU star is Jays' highest-scoring foe since 1988
A glance at Creighton’s scouting report on Brigham Young guard Jimmer Fredette indicates that Antoine Young and Josh Jones are in for a challenging Wednesday night. The report says there are very few things the Cougars’ preseason All-American doesn’t do well on a basketball court. And any borderline deficiencies are negated by a relentless, hard-nosed approach to the game. Young and Jones are the Creighton guards who figure to draw the primary assignment of trying to slow the...

McDermott not fazed by early awards
Doug McDermott's selection — again — as the Missouri Valley's newcomer of the week prompted a question from former Creighton assistant coach Len Gordy. “Isn't there any other newcomers in the league?'' Gordy said, smiling. Obviously, none who are playing as well as the 6-foot-7 freshman. He's won the award each of the three weeks it's been passed out, claiming the latest honor after averaging 16.0 points and shooting 70 percent from the field in Creighton's two games last week.

Jays hit a second roadblock against Wildcats
Creighton tarnished a golden opportunity to mount a second-half comeback Sunday night against Northwestern. The Wildcats then made the Bluejays pay, using a 10-0 run that featured two Michael Thompson 3-pointers to seal a 65-52 victory in front of 3,819 at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Northwestern led by eight points at halftime but scored just five in the first nine minutes of the second half. The Wildcats made just one basket and two free throws while committing seven turnovers in their first 14...

Notes: Shurna impresses McDermott
Creighton coach Greg McDermott likes what forward John Shurna brings to the table for Northwestern's basketball team. Shurna scored 23 points in Sunday's 65-52 win over the Bluejays. The 6-foot-8 national player of the year candidate made three 3-pointers and had three dunks in shooting 7 of 13 from the field. He also chipped in six rebounds, four assists and two steals in 32 minutes. “I love the way he plays the game,'' McDermott said. “He plays it with a lot of energy and...

Bluejays begin tough stretch at Northwestern
The toughest week of the season. That's how Greg McDermott characterizes the three-game, eight-day stretch that his Creighton basketball team is facing, starting with Sunday night's game at Northwestern. Sandwiched between a Dec. 5 game at Nebraska is Wednesday's home game against Brigham Young, which was ranked 23rd in the Associated Press ratings and fell one place shy of landing a spot in the ESPN-USA Today top 25.

Jays overcome slow start, ground Owls
Doug McDermott scored 18 points Saturday night as Creighton rolled to a 75-57 victory over Kennesaw State. The victory, before an announced crowed of 14,313 at Qwest Center Omaha, improved Creighton to 4-1. Kennesaw State dropped its fifth straight in falling to 2-5. Jahenns Manigat and Darryl Ashford each added 13 points for the Bluejays, who overcame a slow start to build a 22-point lead in the second half.

Notes: Defense earns spot for Ashford
Darryl Ashford is getting a chance to help Creighton's offense as a starter because of some strides the senior guard has made on defense. Ashford scored 13 points in making his second start Friday against Kennesaw State. He had 17 points in his first start, which came last Sunday at Iowa State. In the two games, Ashford has made 12 of 18 shots, including 6 of 8 from 3-point range, and handed out seven assists. In three games as a reserve, Ashford averaged 7.0 points while making 2 of 5...

Defensive focus is Creighton's goal
Greg McDermott hopes Creighton’s best offensive game of the season taught his players something about defense. The Bluejays scored 88 points Sunday against Iowa State. They shot 50 percent from the field and 51.9 percent from 3-point range. They scored on 33 of their 67 possessions. What they didn’t do is win. Iowa State pulled out a 91-88 victory when Jamie Vanderbeken nailed a 30-foot shot at the buzzer.
