Creighton’s season ends on penalty kicks

Creighton was 15.6 seconds away from a victory Sunday that would have moved the Bluejays on to the third round of the NCAA soccer tournament. That would prove to be 15.6 ticks too long. Arthur Ivo scored the tying goal for fifth-seeded Southern Methodist on a 30-yard shot that deflected off of a Bluejay defender. After two scoreless overtime periods, the Mustangs won the shootout 5-3 to end Creighton’s season. “If that ball goes straight, we get a goal kick and we win the...

Bluejay men get second shot at SMU

Creighton gets a shot at some soccer redemption Sunday in its NCAA tournament second-round match against Southern Methodist. The 7 p.m. match at Westcott Field in Dallas is a rematch of a game the Mustangs won in mid-September. Or, as the Bluejays remember, it’s a rematch of a game they gave away. Creighton held a 2-0 lead as the match neared its 70th minute. But two goals seven minutes apart sent it into overtime. SMU pulled out a 3-2 win on a penalty kick in the 103rd minute.

Creighton men cruise in NCAA opener

Creighton lived up to its reputation as a fast starter in Thursday’s NCAA soccer tournament match against New Mexico. The Bluejays then avoided the shaky finishes that have plagued them at times this season in posting a 4-1 victory in front of 1,074 at Morrison Stadium. The victory earned Creighton a second-round match Sunday against Southern Methodist. Jose Gomez’s goal 3:21 into the match marked the sixth time in 19 games that the Bluejays had scored in the first five minutes.

Jays catch their breath after Valley loss

Creighton's loss in the Missouri Valley soccer tournament semifinals might be a blessing. Getting knocked out of the tournament last Friday allowed the Bluejays to get an extra couple of days' rest before Thursday night's first-round NCAA tournament match against New Mexico. Creighton is 1-3-1 in its past five matches, raising the question of whether the grind of the season has ground down a roster already short on bodies.

    New Mexico awaits Creighton

Seeing Creighton’s name pop up early in Monday’s NCAA soccer selection show brought a sense of relief for the Bluejays. The players gathered as a group to watch the unveiling of the 48-team field knowing their season’s body of work probably was worthy enough of a tournament spot. At the same time, a 1-3-1 finish, which included getting knocked out of the Missouri Valley tournament in the semifinals, created some doubt.

    Spartans’ Nowka picks Bluejays

Kyle Nowka needed just over a week to make his college choice. “Once they offered, though,” the Lincoln East senior said, “it wasn’t that hard of a decision.” The “They” is the Creighton’s men’s soccer program, and the decision was made by Nowka over the weekend to commit to the Jays. The 5-foot-8, 140-pound Nowka, an All-Nebraska first team selection a season ago, picked CU over Hastings and St. Louis. Nowka probably won’t be ready to...

Two Jays named to all-tourney team

Josh Moran and Andrew Ribeiro were named to the Missouri Valley Conference all-tournament team from Creighton. Host and fifth-seeded Bradley won the tournament on Sunday afternoon in Peoria, Ill., topping second-seeded Southern Illinois-Edwardsville 4-3 in a shootout after playing to a scoreless draw through two overtimes. Creighton, which was eliminated by Bradley in the semifinals Friday, will host an NCAA tournament selection show watch party at the Old Mattress Factory, 13th and Cass...

Jays await NCAA fate as Braves win again

Bradley advanced to the Missouri Valley soccer final with a 3-2 win over 12th-ranked Creighton on Friday night. The Bluejays led 2-1 at halftime, but the Braves rallied to upset the regular-season champion Bluejays for the second time in the past week. Bradley (11-8-2) advances to face MVC newcomer SIU Edwardsville (10-5-3) in the championship match on Sunday. Creighton (12-5-1) puts its postseason fate in the hands of the NCAA selection committee. The Bluejays, who lost to Bradley 2-1 last...

    Jays, Braves ready for rematch

On the surface, Creighton stands to gain only marginal benefits if it can win the Missouri Valley soccer tournament. The 12th-ranked Bluejays could lock up a spot in the NCAA tournament, but with a 12-4-1 record and an official RPI of 16, they likely have already played their way into the 48-team field. Creighton could gain a first-round NCAA bye, but its RPI makes that a borderline proposition. And with the RPIs of the other three semifinalists being 51, 81 and 94, CU could win two games and...

Despite loss, Creighton wins MVC title

Creighton took a number of hits in Saturday’s 2-1 Senior Day soccer loss to Bradley. First, the setback almost cost the No. 10 Bluejays an outright Missouri Valley regular-season championship. Creighton did manage to claim the title outright when Missouri State and SIU Edwardsville played to a 0-0 overtime time Saturday night. The Bluejays’ RPI, and chances of earning a first-round bye in the NCAA tournament, took a shot. Creighton’s RPI was 17th this week, while Bradley was...

    Seniors a ‘determined’ group
