Minneapolis just fine for the Jays
The assumption was always that Creighton — once the Bluejays broke through for an NCAA tournament bid — would make the short trip to Lincoln to open the postseason. Geography is a major consideration when volleyball’s 64-team postseason field gets drawn up, and it could be an enticing potential second-round matchup for Nebraska and Creighton, the state’s only two Division I schools, to square off in the NCAAs.

Bluejays net first NCAA tourney bid
A sophomore setter on the school's volleyball team, Megan Bober sees the word “Creighton” everywhere. On Sunday, she was perhaps never more excited to see it. When “Creighton” flashed on the TV at the Ryan Athletic Center during the NCAA women's volleyball selection show, it meant that the Bluejays had finally secured its first trip to the tournament. “We had a good feeling, but we didn't know 100 percent until we saw it,” Bober said.

Despite loss, Bluejays expecting to join NCAA field
For the sixth straight year, Northern Iowa got the best of Creighton at the Missouri Valley volleyball tournament. For the first time during that stretch, this loss isn't likely to end the Bluejays' season. Unflappable UNI won its second straight Valley tournament championship Saturday afternoon, battling past Creighton for a 25-18, 25-19, 20-25, 25-20 victory in the finals. The 11th-ranked Panthers won their 25th straight match this season while nabbing their 40th consecutive victory against...

All signs point to NCAA berth for Bluejays
The first NCAA volleyball tournament appearance in program history looks like a lock for coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth and her Bluejays. Now Creighton essentially can take a nothing-to-lose approach as it meets powerhouse Northern Iowa. Third-seeded Creighton came up with a 25-21, 25-19, 17-25, 25-12 semifinal victory over No. 2 seed Wichita State on Friday at the Missouri Valley volleyball tournament. The win propelled the Bluejays to their first appearance in the conference championship match.

Jays power past Drake, to meet Wichita State
Creighton needed a Thanksgiving night victory in the worst way to keep its at-large NCAA tournament hopes alive. Save for a letdown in the second set, the Bluejays feasted on an overmatched Drake squad. Surging Creighton opened the Missouri Valley volleyball tournament Thursday with a 25-11, 21-25, 25-18, 25-18 quarterfinal victory over the Bulldogs. The Bluejays, who have won 16 of their last 21 matches, improved to 19-10 while setting up a semifinal showdown against Wichita State.

Bluejay coach thrilled with any foe but Panthers
Creighton will face Drake in Missouri Valley tournament opener. Creighton split its season series against the two volleyball teams it will have to beat to make it to the finals of the Missouri Valley tournament. So it's not like the Bluejays have earned an easy path to this weekend's conference championship match. But Creighton believes it accomplished an important goal this year by capturing the No. 3 seed for the league playoffs. In doing so, the Bluejays know they can't face Valley...

Oelke, Runge make Valley academic team
Creighton’s Allie Oelke and Alicia Runge have been named to the Missouri Valley Conference scholar-athlete first team, as voted on by league sports information directors. Oelke, who ranks third on the Creighton team in kills and digs per set, was named to the team for the second straight season. Runge, an honorable mention pick last year, ranks second in the MVC in kills per set and in the top 100 nationally in kills per set and points per set.

Creighton clinches No. 3 seed with win
Laurel Sanford had 20 kills and Alicia Runge added 17 as the Creighton volleyball team ended regular season play with a 28-26, 25-13, 26-28, 25-15 win over Southern Illinois to cap a weekend sweep of the Salukis and Evansville. The Bluejay win, along with a Missouri State loss to Northern Iowa Saturday, clinched the No. 3 seed for Creighton in next weekend’s Missouri Valley tournament at Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Creighton rolls past Evansville
The Creighton volleyball team began its final regular-season weekend in impressive fashion, defeating Evansville 25-20, 25-15, 25-16 before a crowd of 812 at Sokol Arena. While CU is in the middle of a battle for third in the Missouri Valley Conference with Missouri State, the talk among the Bluejays about the regular-season finale Saturday against Southern Illinois hasn't been just about volleyball. “I think they've made guesses of who's going to cry. That's been the talk more than...

Injury gives Bloemke head start on coaching career
For Lauren Bloemke, the physical pain went away months ago. The other kind of hurt — the ache that can’t be fixed by any surgeon’s tool — still lingers and stings from time to time. But nobody will ever be able to say that Bloemke gave in to self-pity or gave up on her Creighton teammates. In a cruel development that knocked the Bluejays for a loop before the volleyball season even began, Bloemke tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee in late July. It...

Valley honors CU’s Benitez
Creighton’s Nayka Benitez has been named Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week. Benitez averaged 9.67 digs and 0.67 aces per set during Creighton’s 3-0 win over Drake on Saturday. Benitez’s 29 digs were not only a season high for the senior, but the most in Bluejay history for a three-set match. Creighton (16-10, 11-5 MVC) closes the regular season this weekend with 7 p.m. home matches against Evansville on Friday and Southern Illinois on Saturday.
