Notes: State loses two former champions

Nebraska golf lost a couple of colorful personalities with the recent deaths of Ralph “Whitie” Reed and Bobbie Hopp. Reed, who was 97 when he died June 9 in Scottsdale, Ariz., is believed to be the first Husker to be a conference champion. He won the 1953 Nebraska Amateur and entered the Nebraska Golf Hall of Fame in 2000.

Kosch defends title as Don Lee Flight champ

Wes Kosch has been in two World-Herald Publinks finals and never trailed. The business teacher and golf coach at Ralston High School became the first repeat champion in the Don Lee Championship Flight since 2006 as he rolled past 1996 winner Gregg Vonnahme 9 and 7 in Sunday's scheduled 36-hole final at Benson Park.

Vanier qualifies for U.S. Public Links

Mike Vanier of Lincoln finished 10 strokes ahead of the field Tuesday to qualify for next month's U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. Vanier shot a 1-under-par 141 for 36 holes at Yankee Hill Country Club. He will play in the July 9 to 14 national tournament at Soldier Hollow Golf Course in Midway, Utah.
