TOM SHATEL
Now that the confetti has been swept up, and college football has a playoff, I have one question. What if there are five undefeated teams? The chances of that happening are about as good as the chances of a Mountain West or Mid-American team getting in the playoff. Right?

Cue the confetti. Pour the champagne. Pass out the stogies. College football is the proud papa of a bouncing baby playoff. That's a good thing. The...
Both the College World Series and the first day of the Swim Trials go off swimmingly.

Shatel: Football playoff can learn from CWS success
The big (and occasionally small) thinkers of college football meet in Chicago on Wednesday. Their mission: come to some kind of consensus on a playoff plan that the presidents will approve, or, won't laugh down.

Shatel: ESPN getting its kicks — and the CWS, too
This week, the College World Series isn't exactly America's pastime. It's more like past-your-bedtime. For the first four nights, the second game of the CWS doubleheader started at about 8:15 p.m. The single games Tuesday and Wednesday night are scheduled to start at 7. Same for the CWS championship games beginning on Sunday.

Shatel Q&A;: Friendships are Buffett's sports riches
One of my favorite sports interviews didn't take place in a dugout, a football locker room or a musty old gym. To find this Hall of Famer, I had to go to the Kiewit Plaza in midtown Omaha.

Shatel: NU fans seem to harbor no grudge with Van Horn
Arkansas is in the winners bracket of the College World Series, so here's an interesting question: What if Dave Van Horn makes the championship series? Will Nebraskans root for NU's former baseball coach to win a national championship?

Shatel: Sinking Cinderella like a cinder block
Stony Brook, meet Stony Wall. That’s the UCLA baseball team. The Bruins don’t have the catchy name or the cuddly story. But they have the team, the team that pounded Cinderella 9-1 on Friday, the team that might stay in Omaha long enough to pay property taxes.

Shatel: CWS transition continues with two new, delightful underdogs
What's a rock star to do on his first day in a new town? Go exploring. On Wednesday night, four Stony Brook players headed out, in search of adventure and steak. They left their Embassy Suites hotel and walked up 10th Street, in bright red Stony Brook gear, in search of Cascio's. People in cars honked or waved to them. Some stopped and greeted...

Shatel: Gibson's legacy is finally set in stone
The rope was untied and the statuette was unveiled. And everyone ducked. Not really. But just wait until the life-size statue of Bob Gibson is finished and set outside Werner Park. The statue is a model of Gibson following through after a pitch, his eyes straight ahead. It oozes determination. Mixed with intimidation.

Shatel: Hats off to Stony Brook ... If you can find one
The newly created Omaha chapter of Stony Brook University is taking volunteers. They will hold their first meeting when the Seawolves take the field at the College World Series. But will the Omaha Seawolves have unis?

Shatel: If OKC can thrive in the bigs, why can’t Omaha?
The other night, as I watched Charles Barkley ride a horse to the Oklahoma City Thunder game, and 18,000 Oklahomans in white shirts celebrate a trip to the NBA Finals, several images came forth. I thought of the former Big Eight football writer who once called Oklahoma City “the world’s largest truck stop.” In the most...
