Man sentenced in beating

LINCOLN (AP) — A 55-year-old man has been sentenced to 12 to 20 years in prison for using a board to beat a drunken friend senseless in southeast Nebraska.

James Jelen was sentenced Tuesday. He'd been convicted of felony assault and use of a weapon.

Authorities say Jelen called 911 on Nov. 16 and reported the beating. Medical workers sent to the scene about two miles east of Waverly found a 56-year-old man with a bloody face lying under Jelen's pickup.

The man was flown to a hospital, where his blood alcohol level tested out nearly five times the legal limit for driving. Jelen's blood tested at nearly twice the legal limit.

Prosecutors say the men had been on a two-day drinking binge.
