Number of same-sex couples rises

LINCOLN — The number of same-sex couples in Nebraska has grown more than 60 percent over the past decade.

A report issued by the Williams Institute at UCLA's Law School and based on census data says there were 3,749 gay couples in Nebraska in 2010, up from 2,332 in 2000.

The report also says 71 percent of Nebraska's gay couples are women, and more than 800 gay couples are raising children. The majority of gay couples live in the eastern half of the state.

Nebraska doesn't recognize same-sex marriage. Neighboring Iowa does, and the report found that state had 6,540 gay couples in 2010. — AP
