Plan your day: State fairs have hundreds of events, so check websites for what will appeal to your family. The Nebraska State Fair site has a "Create Your Day" function to help you plan your schedule.
Arrive early: Allow 15 to 45 minutes to park, walk to the gate and buy gate admission tickets.
Take note of where you parked: Take a moment to familiarize yourself with your surroundings, including the gate where you entered and the parking lot, to avoid confusion when it's time to depart.
Check the weather: Fair events go on rain or shine so be prepared with raincoats, sunscreen and sun hats.
Wear comfortable shoes: Entertainment acts and vendors cover more than 225 acres at the Nebraska State Fair and 445 acres at the Iowa State Fair.
Leave coolers at home: They are not permitted on the Iowa or Nebraska state fairgrounds.
Bring a camera: Save family memories but respect rules that may prohibit their use at concerts.
Bring cash for food: You'll be hungry and tempted by ribs, chicken, corn dogs and more.
Plan how to find each other: Once inside the fairgrounds, establish a meeting place in case your group becomes separated. If you're lost, you may seek assistance at information booths on the fairgrounds.
