Bahnsen Park updates 'awesome'

COUNCIL BLUFFS — The recent renovations at Bahnsen Park have proven to be a big hit.

"It's awesome," said Geoff Hubbard, recreation supervisor for the Council Bluffs Parks Department. "I've heard lots of compliments that the fields were great and that they're just as good as those at the Council Bluffs Recreation Complex. We got a lot of use there this year — and will for years to come."

The Art Botts baseball complex in the park at 17th Street and Avenue O received new infield surfaces last year, along with outfield irrigation, grading, new fencing, parking lot improvements, new walkways and an entry sign honoring the late Botts, a devoted supporter of youth activities, and Stan Bahnsen, a local favorite son who became a major league pitcher.

The success there, Hubbard said, has stirred interest in upgrading fields at Roberts and Sunset Parks. There's also a master plan in the works for Valley View Park, he said.

It's been a good, city-sponsored recreational year overall, Hubbard said, including some 70 men's summer softball teams.

"That's a good number for us."

Now is the time to sign up for fall sports, he said. The deadline to register for youth flag football, and men's and co-ed fall softball is Friday, he said.

To register or for more information, go to the department's website here, or visit the department at City Hall.
