Items needed

Food, please: Heartland Hope Mission and Hy-Vee Supermarkets ask the community to donate food for the needy. From Thursday through Aug. 21, all 11 metropolitan-area Hy-Vees will have special food sacks for sale for the food pantry of Heartland Hope Mission, formerly Mission for All Nations. The public can purchase a sack of food to Stuff a Truck for the needy. The food collected at Council Bluffs' two Hy-Vee stores will benefit Micah House.

Sports gear: Students at the Heartland Family Service Therapeutic School are training for the Special Olympics. For practice, they need donations of gently used sports equipment — bicycles (all sizes), tennis rackets, racquetball rackets, skates, fishing poles, etc. — all in working condition. To donate, contact Jill McIntosh-Carnes at [email protected] and the school will arrange pickup.

Books for Omaha: Gently used books are needed for the annual Dundee Day Book Sale, which will be Aug. 27. Bring books — no magazines, encyclopedias or textbooks — in boxes, if possible, to Dundee Bank, 5015 Underwood Ave. Sale of the books will help pay for children's books and programs at Sorensen Library Branch.

Books for Tajikistan: Tobacco & Phones 4 Less and the American-Tajik Association are co-sponsoring a drive to collect books for the new National Library of Tajikistan. Fiction and nonfiction English-, Tajik- and Russian-language books in good condition will be accepted. You can drop off books at the Tobacco & Phones 4 Less at 42nd and Grover Streets.

The cupboard was bare: Flooding and economic problems have strapped pet owners trying to feed their pets. The Nebraska Humane Society Pet Food Pantry has had to turn away pet owners in need. The shelter is hosting a drive to collect pet food for flood victims and others who need help. Drop off dog and cat food and litter at the shelter, 8929 Fort St., during business hours, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekends. Tape shut opened bags. Leave food in its original bag so the society knows what it is.

Eyeglasses and phones: Rolling Hills Ranch retirement community, 4324 N. 132nd St., will collect used eyeglasses and cellphones for local women's shelters through Saturday.Drop off donations in the Rolling Hills Ranch lobby between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. To learn more, call 402-391-1055.
