'Birther' sergeant discharged

By Matthew Hansen
WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

Staff Sgt. Daryn Moran, a so-called "birther" who denies President Barack Obama's U.S. citizenship, is being discharged from the Air Force, the military confirmed Wednesday.

Moran, of Omaha, says he quit reporting for duty at an Air Force base in Germany last week to protest the commander in chief, whom he disparages as a criminal who should be arrested.

But the Air Force, in its first statement on the case, said Moran was in fact already in the process of being discharged when he stopped reporting for work.

“He is currently outprocessing for discharge from the Air Force, which was previously approved by his commander on August 4th,” says a statement released by U.S. Air Forces in Europe.

Air Force officials didn't give a reason for the discharge and didn't comment on Moran's behavior.

Moran, in an e-mail, confirmed he was being discharged but said he couldn't provide details until a later date.

Moran has spent much of the past week vilifying Obama in interviews, in online forums and on his Twitter feed, behavior that appears to violate the military's code of conduct.

He also repeatedly argued that Barack Obama isn't a citizen of the United States -- a disproved conspiracy theory that lost some steam when the president publicly released his long-form birth certificate earlier this year.

During his tour of the "birther" blogosphere, the Air Force staff sergeant called Obama "the enemy" and "a criminal" and made vague references to his desire to "remove" the president. He also derided the military as unprepared and shoddy.

Howard Moran, a retired Air Force sergeant who lives in Omaha, has defended his son's words and actions to The World Herald, but expressed worry that his son would be arrested.

But it's a discharge, not arrest, that will end Moran's time in the Air Force.

This contradicts Moran's stated goal in the past week that either he or the president of the United States should end up in handcuffs.

"Now it's plain and simple," he tweeted Monday. "Arrest B. Obama or arrest me. I'm waiting in my house."

I think he should change that "a" in his last name to an "o."

Obama's 2nd version, i.e., long form Certificate of Live Birth has been reviewed by many experts and found to be a forgery. The Hawaii Dept. of Health has been issued a suponea via Federal Court order to produce Obama's original Certificate of Live Birth. So far they have obstructed any efforts to obey the court order.

Thus, your assertion "that Barack Obama isn't a citizen of the United States -- a disproved conspiracy theory that lost some steam when the president publicly released his long-form birth certificate earlier this year," is incorrect and should be revised to state the facts, not Obama's spin.

The next great question Obama refuses to answer is why does he have a Connecticut Social Security number, when he's never lived in that State???

Please present ALL SIDES, all of the FACTS, before you just toss out what the Obama adminstration states as factual. Much appreciated.

I don't care if the US President is not "officially" born in this country. If someone has lived the majority of his or her life in the states that's good enough for me. All this talk about being born here is tiring. Frankly, all of the people we've voted in have done terrible jobs with the financial well-being of the US.... and they were ALL born here.

This country has been around long enough and has a large enough population to forget about this clause. If the majority of citizens want a candidate for president it doesn't matter where he was born. Jesus wasn't born here either, so he couldn't run the country! not that any conservatives would vote for him anyway. get over it freaks!

I didn't vote for President Obama, but for those that choose to question his citizenship, why don't you simply pony up the money and sue to find out the answers. I'm sure you have a couple of million dollars lying around to pay for the legal fees. Come on people, if there were anything at all to this notion that he isn't a citizen the Hilary Clinton campaign would have found it during the primaries.

I know that to a lot of folks, the President included, the United States Constitution sadly isn't worth the paper it's printed on anymore. However, if you'd bother to read it you'd learn, perhaps for the very first time, that one does indeed need to be born in this country to be President of it. Just living here a while doesn't cut it. The rules are the rules. Deal with it.

No one has found it to be a forgery and it is quite the opposite. Though I think they shouldn't even let this loser make the news, they definitely shouldn't present what you consider "facts." I too can make up "facts" out of thin air, doesn't mean it should be reported on.

The Constitution states in Article II, Section 1, Clause 5:
"No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States."

Yes it matters... just like the constitution matters. Our current (and past) governments seem to gloss over the constitution if it benefits them. I do not know if it is real or fake. I've not examined it. If the birth certificate is a real, it needs to be proven. Anyone here "speculating" is doing just that... speculating. Stop reading the conspiracy web sites and ask your elected representatives to support a push for absolute proof.

The "Birther" issue aside - this man made an oath to serve his country. "I, (NAME), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God." No where does it say that I'll obey the orders of the officers appointed over me - IF I agree with the President. What you have here is a mal-content who was a Marine- got out - couldn't cut it in the real world- then enlisted again. Now he's decided to walk away from his duty. He's not a garbage man- He's a US Soldier. This kid has no grasp of what that means. He was obviously brought up by his father - a man who "has checked on the internet and believes his son is right" - to think that duty is a convienance. Bet he'll be one of the first ones to complain when he has no more unemployment benefits to support himself and any children he probably walked away from also.

I bet the Sgt didn't have a problem cashing his Air Force paychecks, in spite of his insistence that he didn't have to report for duty. This joker just didn't want to serve and obey, and that is the first duty of our military. Failing to serve should be a one-way ticket to Leavenworth.

I realize the Birthers desperately want to believe our President is some secret Muslim sent here by the enemy, but they give us compelling reason to say that stuff found "the interweb" is not necessary a reliable source. Time to move on - go campaign against him if you want to replace the President.

I just ran across the article.I grew up in Omaha but move 40 years ago. It's good to see that there are still more imbeciles per square mile then anywhere in the U.S.Give us all a break and stay right where you are.

This birther nonsense has to stop! The Federal Court order you speak of is not that the original birth certificate has to be produced, but rather why Orly Taizt, the "founder" of this birther idiocy has not been allowed to personally view the document.

The Connecticut SSN charade can be explained in that when Obama got his SSN, he was in his teens, his father was known to be residing in Connecticut at the time. The application for a SNN is based on where the application originates, not where the person that number is for is living. You do not get a SNN at birth, so why would it have to be a Hawaii number? Mine is a Nebraska number, yet I was born in South Carolina. Birthers need to find something more productive to do with their time.

Maybe you ought to do just a bit more fact-checking on that SSN, my friend:

Again - this story is NOT about the "Birther" issue - it's about a boy (I refuse to call him a man because a man would stand up and do his job) made a conscious decision to defy an order. The people on here who keep bringing up the rest are blowing smoke. This US Soldier did NOT do his job...end of story. Arrest him - put him in Levanworth - and move on.

I never said I was not aware that the Constitution states the person must be born in the United States of America. For the record, I am aware of it. I also am aware of my freedom to express myself. Just because something was written into law does not mean that law can't be changed. Again, just stating my opinion. God Bless America.

Posted by: SAJN on 08/18/11 @ 3:57 pm:

No one has the right to ignore the Constitution, it is the law. If you don't agree with it, get it amended.

Posted by: SgtMarine on 08/18/11 @ 4:40 pm:

Yes the constitution does state a natural born citizen. A child with one parent who is a citizen and has lived 5 years in the United States 2 of those after the age of 14 is a natural born citizen. Birthers just want to ignore Obama's white mother.

Airman Moron wants to detract from the fact that he swore allegiance to the US to serve in the military then changed his mind when it was too hard for him. A large number of of us who served successfully did not agree with the political situation but served our country faithfully, not stopping to have tantrums, not blaming the President, not clicking our heels three times to go back to Kansas. In each and every presidential administration one could make an issue of an illegal war, an illegal act, etc., but not after swearing allegiance to the government. Unfortunately this guy's recruiter didn't have a moron detector!

If the Air Force indicated that the discharge was already underway when this man decided to stop reporting for duty, then it sounds like he had already screwed up badly enough to be kicked out even before he started spouting this birther crap. So all the online comments and tweets end up just looking like his sour grapes about getting kicked out. Maybe he should own up to what got him kicked out in the first place.

Why does the story about a Kook have to be printed?
