Daycare's license suspended

LINCOLN (AP) — The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services says it has suspended the child care license of a Columbus daycare provider.

Officials say Sara Schmidt, who does business as Bright Beginnings Daycare in Columbus, didn't notify the department about pending child abuse charges as required by state regulations.

The department says Schmidt was charged with three counts of misdemeanor child abuse June 24 in Platte County Court. Schmidt's license is suspended until the criminal charges are resolved. Department officials say they make take additional disciplinary action if the case is not resolved in her favor.

Schmidt has been licensed since October 2006 to provide care for 12 children, ages six weeks to 12 years. The suspension went into effect Aug. 5.
