News of note:

• Computer hackers broke into MECA's computer and payroll systems last month and stole $217,000, with MECA acknowledging that it was the victim of an "Eastern European-based cyber scheme.''

• Hail, heavy rain and high winds batter parts of eastern Nebraska and western Iowa on Thursday night, with Omaha's Eppley Airfield taking a heavy beating.

• Omaha City Council member Ben Gray is making plans to revive a controversial proposal to ban discrimination against homosexual and transgender people in the city.

• Viola Herms Drath, a 91-year-old socialite and acclaimed writer with strong ties to Nebraska, was killed last week in her Washington, D.C.-area home, and her middle-aged husband stands accused of her slaying.
