LINCOLN — And now, here to present the final Big 12 North trophy to the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe.
Mr. Commissioner? Is anybody from the Big 12 office here?
Nope.
There was no Big 12 North trophy presentation on Friday afternoon after NU sealed the deal with a resounding 45-17 victory over Colorado at Memorial Stadium.
That's because there was no trophy.
That's because nobody from the Big 12 office showed up to present the trophy, which is standard league protocol. Hmm. All the flights from Dallas to Omaha sold out this weekend?
“Apparently they got a lot of nasty mail from Nebraskans,'' said Nebraska Athletic Director Tom Osborne. “For some reason, they didn't feel they'd be safe. I don't know.''
This was already a juicy saga, with Beebe potentially having to hand the Big 12 championship trophy to Osborne and Bo Pelini next Saturday night at Cowboys Stadium. Can you say Al Davis and Pete Rozelle?
If the Huskers win, Beebe might do the honors next to a bodyguard.
In a phone interview with Blair Kerkhoff of the Kansas City Star on Friday night, Beebe said he and his family had received death threats in recent weeks from people purported to be Nebraska fans.
“We had a threat that you're going to die and your family is going to die in your house,'' Beebe said. “You have to start taking it seriously.''
Beebe also said that someone called him, apparently impersonating a police officer and told him “they had my daughter (who is in college) and she was unresponsive.''
That turned out to be false.
Beebe told Kerkhoff that he spoke with an independent contractor who works in the National Football League security office. That person told Beebe it wasn't worth attending the game until they could check out all the threats.
The commissioner said he had received more than 2,000 e-mails about Nebraska, many of them vulgar, and that his staff had received vulgar messages, too.
Beebe is a former NCAA enforcement representative who was in on several tough cases, including the SMU death penalty. But he said he's “never had to deal with this amount of vulgarity and nastiness.''
This puts the commissioner's absence in proper perspective. I know some of you are saying Beebe was gutless not to show up. But I think he had his reasons. Good reasons.
That doesn't excuse the Big 12 from having someone here. Nobody in Nebraska would know Associate Commissioner Tim Allen from the comedian/actor Tim Allen. Or media chief Bob Burda.
Heck, the Big 12 could have sent Assistant Commissioner Ed Stewart. You know, the former All-America linebacker at Nebraska. Husker fans are going to give him grief?
Also, the trophy ceremony would have taken place in the Huskers' locker room, perhaps the most heavily guarded spot in the state.
For weeks, the commissioner has been mum about the whole Nebraska business, the Eric Martin suspension, the 16 penalties last week.
Why make all the ugliness public the week that thousands of Husker fans will make the trip to Dallas? Will it subdue the angry fans? Or aggravate those who want attention?
It seems the attention from this could have been avoided by sending one unknown Big 12 rep.
Then again, maybe there's just no getting around a fiery, emotional throwing-potted-plants end to this divorce.
I spoke with Osborne alone after the game. He declined to comment later, when told of Beebe's comments. He said Beebe had relayed his concerns earlier in the week.
Earlier, Osborne didn't seem upset at the lack of Big 12 presence. He just rolled his eyes. He shrugged. At this point, there are no more surprises in this story and few emotions left for the man who has seen it all in over four decades.
“Whatever,'' Osborne said. “We'll just roll with the punch. I'm just glad we won it. I'm proud of Bo and the guys. Now we'll go down there and try and win the championship.''
What type of reaction will Nebraska officials and the team get from the league when they arrive in Dallas next Friday?
“I have no idea,'' Osborne said.
Better yet, will the league beef up security at the game? Who knows?
What should help is the choice of officials. Osborne said Walt Anderson, the Big 12's supervisor of officials, told him the crew who did the Nebraska-Texas A&M; game would not be doing the Big 12 championship game.
“We do get an all-star group of officials, No. 1 at their positions,'' Osborne said. “These will be supposedly the No. 1-rated referees. It won't be the same group (as A&M;). As far as I'm concerned, that sounds good. We're pleased.
“My understanding is that the referee will be from a different crew and we haven't had that crew. And there will be four members of this person's crew there, and they're all rated very high. I don't think we've had that crew this year.''
Osborne said he spoke with Anderson Monday and didn't bother to ask him about the 16 penalties against NU at Texas A&M.;
“I didn't ask him, and he didn't say anything,'' Osborne said. “We send the (video) clips in every week. We didn't hear back from them. There's really not much to say right now.''
Both Osborne and Beebe are playing nice at this point, which is another way to say both sides are just eager to get this thing over, ASAP.
“We just hope we can play really well,'' Osborne said. “It's important to remember that we have basketball, a lot of sports still to go. We'd like to leave on good terms. That's our intention.''
In Beebe's interview with the Kansas City Star's Kerkhoff, which Kerkhoff shared with me, Beebe saluted Osborne and NU Chancellor Harvey Perlman for their comments last week.
“I'm really grateful for what the chancellor and Tom Osborne have done to mollify this, and what Bo Pelini has done,” he told the Star. “The tone set by the leadership has a huge effect on situations like this.
“We're talking about a very small percentage of a fan base, very small. Nebraska fans are some of the best and most passionate fans in sports. I think this will all turn out OK.''
Look, I'm no Big 12 fan. It's been the Mickey Mouse clubhouse in so many ways. That continued Friday, when the league didn't bother to send a mailroom clerk to Lincoln.
But I don't condone death threats, either. I don't think many in Husker Nation do, either.
This needs to be over. It's going to be over in a week, unless you're going to chart Doc Sadler's traveling calls. Nebraska has made it back to Jerry Jones World, and the Huskers are 60 minutes from a trophy and an awkward, satisfying moment.
We seemed destined to get a compelling, unforgettable climax. And the game should be pretty good, too.

I love the way the Huskers put all the baggage from last week's controversial loss to Texas A&M behind them and just went out and took care of business today and did it in a convincing way.
The fact the Big 12 didn't send anyone from the league office to present the Huskers with the trophy for winning the North Division shows no class whatsoever.
What sounds delicious, though, is the thought of Beebe having to hand the Big 12 championship trophy to Bo Pelini and Tom Osborne after next week's title game.
Except for having a shot to win the national title, that's a pretty satisfying scenario.
Go Huskers!!! Play so well next week, so league officials have no choice and are forced to hand you the Big 12 title on your way out the door to the Big Ten.

OMG, are you kidding me? The Big 12 did not send anyone to Lincoln to give the trophy to the Huskers? How rude and unprofessional!! Death threats, P L E A S E, that is a crock!!! Now, we have to go play in that darn state of Texas, it utterly disgusts me!!! They continue to show their true colors over and over again....let's just be done with these idiots!!! DISGUSTED!!

Nobody condones death threats. But I have a hard time believing that Dan Beebe actually believed that one of his staffers would not be safe in the care of the University of Nebraska. The stadium is crawling with state troopers and that staffer would of course have his own armed escort. Beebe didn't want to come himself? That's fine, I don't think most Nebraskans wanted the guy here anyway.
By the way folks, I am one of many Nebraskans who expressed my displeasure with the Big XII offices. My correspondence was not friendly, but I didn't find the need to use any profanity and I wouldn't have dreamt of threatening anyone. So to those that did, hopefully you're caught soon. To those who were simply vulgar, come on folks, we're HUSKER NATION, we're not Florida State or Philadelphia Eagles fans, we conduct ourselves BETTER then that!

My guess is that all of the threatening phone calls & emails came from fans from OTHER teams, preteneding to be Husker fans. I mean really . .

2000 nasty messages, many with threats of violence?! All because of officiating in a football game? Are you people nuts?
Posted by: hskrnvgs on 11/27/10 @ 8:02 am:
I don't condone death threats for any reason at all...That being said, I don't condone referees that fail to call the game properly...Too many times, they have made themselves the focal point of a game...They are to monitor the game, not be a part of the game...And from what I have seen of the officiating this year of the Nebraska games, the Big 12 needs to hire refs that have no affilliation with any Big 12 school, and they shouldn't live in any state the Big 12 is in..
It makes no difference if there were threats or not, the Big 12 showed its Texas lack of class by not showing up with at least a representative to present the Big 12 North Championship! Typical Texas Mafia style..The bigger question is if Nebraska wins the Big 12: will the Big 12 hand them the trophy or will they mail it in? And will the Big 12 send representatives to the Nebraska bowl game?
My guess is if Colorado had won the Big 12 North Championship instead of Nebraska that the Big 12 still would not have shown up...Say what you will and defend the Big 12 all you want, but the Big 12 (more specifically, Texas and the Texas Mafia) brought all this breakup on themselves...They are only getting what they sowed in the beginning...And the Big 12 bigwigs are showing just how immature they are in handling Nebraska and Colorado leaving them for much greener pastures...

I find it ironic that Beebe cites good leadership by Nebraska when he has failed to provide any while in charge of the league. I don't condone threats, but this is just another attempt to villify Nebraska on its way out the door. There isn't a worse PR scenario for Beebe and the Big 12 than Nebraska winning the football title in its final year.

I feel bad for the players, they totally got hosed. They worked so hard to earn the award, and no one from the Texas Ten conference had the spine to sneak in and present it. Of course, I strongly disagree with the actions of the "fans" who harassed the officials; they is NOT what true fans do regardless of the team they cheer for. Those actions are just as classless as the officials who chickened out of giving the players what they earned.

Let's get something straight. Every time a coach, his players and his staff walk into a stadium full of tens of thousands charged (and, at times, inebriated) fans, they are risking their well being.
The dangerous potential of mob dynamics is well documented. In truth, it would only take 1% of those in the stadiums to rush the field and create bloody mayhem. It would only take one angry fan to shoot a gun.
And, yet, the coaches and players on one side of the field or the other go out there into the middle of a sea of hostility each and every week. Why? Because they want to. Because they are asked to. Because it's their job. Because they are men.
They also trust the security of the school, the security of the stadium, the campus police, the city police, the state police, the FBI and whomever else is working to ensure their safety.
For Dan Beebe and the rest of the Big 12 officials to say that they didn't show up because they felt threatened is at best disingenuous and at worst pathetic. For them to use that excuse is for them to say that they do not trust the security measures that they, themselves, helped formulate, that they, themselves, ask players and coaches to trust week in and week out.
I believe Dan Beebe is hiding behind a convenient excuse. I believe he would rather look cowardly in comparison to the young men and woman who play the sports that pay his wages than hand a trophy to a program he despises.
Posted by: Givinghimwhathewants on 11/27/10 @ 9:17 am:
Beebe needs to provide the OWH with copies of the threats (with the appropriate information removed at the time of publication), or as far as I'm concerned this is fabricated.
Notice in his quote is that he received 2000 e-mails "concerning" Nebraska. NOT 2000 death threats, etc. Everyone calm down. He is getting what he wants here. He's making all of us look like raving fools, and now he's making himself look like a victim.
Posted by: Letsbereal! on 11/27/10 @ 9:19 am:
I for one would like to see some of these supposed email "death threats" against Dan Beebe. He and the rest of the Big12 commission aren't worth the trouble. They have no class and I'm glad they didn't come to Lincoln.
Posted by: husker boxster on 11/27/10 @ 9:26 am:
So Beebe praises Tom, Harvey, and Bo for their response to the A&M debacle, yet he is suspiciously quiet about the issue? Not even a "we reviewed the tape and thought it was handled properly" statement. But he has time to talk to a reporter in enemy territory. It all kind of adds to the conspiracy theory, doesn't it? It wouldn't take much action on Beebe's part to put out that fire, but once again he does nothing and things spiral out of control. That old Genesis song "No Reply At All" resonates in the back of my mind.
I just hope we don't get jobbed on Sat. Beebe should feel safe in his cockroach laden Texas long enough to hand us the trophy. That will be a MasterCard moment if ever there was one.
Posted by: Jim on 11/27/10 @ 9:28 am:
No one has to put up with any kind of threats but Dan Beebe is showing himself to be comical. Send Ed Stewart and no one here in Nebraska says anything negative and the conference saves face.
Oh that is right, this conference has at least two faces.
Go Huskers defeat the South champion and be respectful as Nebraska leaves as Big 12 Champions. Pretty good year to be in the hunt when Texas is 5-7.

The collusion between Beebe, the officials, and everything 'Texas' this year was blatant and obvious. The only way we can leave happy is to win the Big XII and leave the trophy at midfield as we walk off!!!
The Big XII is bush league... run by Texas... and will not prevail. BTW... which bowl are the 'Horns in this year???

I would not be surprised at all if Beebe received 2,000 death threats. I wouldn't be surprised if Beebe suppressed the number slightly to keep the outrage lower in this nasty divorce. Nebraska fans are NOT as classy as they like to think they are. They certainly aren't the worst fans out there, but they aren't the best; they're average. There's nothing wrong with being a perfectly normal/average fan base, the problem is when they try to say they're something they aren't.

Too bad Beebe will be handing over the Big XII Trophy to a team from Oklahoma next week. The Husker team and fans can complain all they want but it doesn't change the fact that Nebraska is an average team playing in the worst division in DI football this year. Winning the North only has enabled them to lose in Dallas next week and leave the Big XII with another season of wins over Big XII North patsies and losses to most of the teams from the South Division.
Bo's best win is over an Oklahoma State team which will either destroy Nebraska next Saturday or give the Sooners the same opportunity.

Wow! What a cheap shot? I've read that Beebe and his family are getting death threats from Nebraska fans (Kirkhoff in the KC Star wrote it). If he shows up, he'll get booed and threatened. If he sends someone else, you'll just write that he was cowardly for sending some minion to give the award to the Big 12 North Division champs. He can't win and Husker fans have no excuse for acting like SEC fans do when things don't go their way. By the way, good luck getting a call in Happy Valley, Ann Arbor, Columbus or Madison.

Hey Jane, for being in the worst division in DI football, Nebraska beat the best team in the south on the road by 10, hung with the 2nd best team in the south without their starting QB on the road losing by 3. Missouri beat Oklahoma by 9. Throttled Texas A&M on the road. So, I think Nebraska has as good of a chance as anybody to win Saturday night. They have a better defense than both Oklahoma State and Oklahoma. Their back-up QB has some confidence after Friday's game, if he needs to play. We even saw our injured senior QB come in and complete some passes Friday, so we know he is healthy enough to play Saturday.

You don't say something like this with out presenting the evidence, unless you are Dan Beebe. Yeah, why didn't he send Ed Stewart. If Beebe truely recieved death threats via e-mail, then those e-mails could be traced back to the sender and that person could be charged with making terroristic threats. And you can bet that the Big XII would be looking into the threats and prosecuting the individuals repsonsible, plus it would be national news (ie. ESPN or Fox Sports). Dan Beebe is just a child who didnt want to hand a trophy out to Nebraska and instead of admitting it like a man makes up some bogus story about fearing for his life. If death threats were sent then investigate and prosecute those people within the full extent of the law as there is no place in society for that. As a Husker fan living in Texas, I thought the creation of the Big 12 would allow fair and equal reporting of my Huskers - it never happened. South division only throughout the year. I miss the Husker vs Sooner Thanksgiving day games that went away with the creation of the Big 12. Well it appears if things go right we will see one more classic .... Goodbye Big 12 - Awesome Big 8 finish. The divorce is final next weekend. Go Huskers

Was there a Big XII rep in College Station to present the trophy if we won that game?
