What happened in the Midlands on this day? Here's a sampling from the World-Herald archives.
WESTROADS IS OPEN
August 13, 1968: Sixty-eight stores are open or will start business within a few days at the Westroads Mall, and the merchants will have a grand opening, starting Wednesday. Even though the center isn't filled, developer John Wiebe says he is studying the possibility of building an addition. Westroads, the nation's eighth-largest shopping center, has spurred development in west Omaha, said Mr. Wiebe.
1996: The ramp from westbound West Center Road to northbound Interstate 680 was open Monday. The old ramp was removed for rebuilding more than a year ago, shutting off access to northbound I-680 from West Center Road. The Nebraska Roads Department also opened new ramps at the L Street interchange with I-80.
1984: Although installation of the new artificial surface on the University of Nebraska at Omaha's Al Caniglia Field is to be completed just in time for UNO football practice, Athletic Director Don Leahy doesn't call Caniglia Field a "football field." "It's a multiuse facility," Leahy said. "You've got campus recreation, intramurals, physical education, athletics and community use." Ten years ago, when the field was converted from grass to artificial turf, the Nebraska Legislature included a requirement that the field be open for use by as many people as possible — not just football.
